Phase I of this new light-rail project marks the beginning of passenger rail service between Denton and Carrollton in north central Texas. Planning for the Denton County Transit Authority railway has been under way since 2001. The overall project will eventually interline with Dallas Area Rapid Transit to provide single-seat service from Denton to downtown Dallas.
Phase I work involves development of a 21.6-mi corridor and five new stations. The job includes demolition of existing facilities; earthwork and roadbed construction; track installation; installation of communications and train control/signal systems; utilities; street improvements; bridges and aerial guideway; retaining walls; sound walls; commuter rail stations; landscaping; and construction of a hike and bike trial.
The completed railway will accommodate dual mode rail vehicles capable of operating on the non-electrified 21.6 mi of Phase I service, and in electric mode on the DART LRT from Carrollton to Dallas.
