The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation’s new eight-story research tower offers 185,000 sq ft of new space dedicated to the study of Alzheimer’s disease, lupus, cancer, cardiovascular disease and other afflictions.
The design is derived from a “pinwheel” floor plan concept. Above the lobby, the main mass of the building is cut by four deep slots which bring light and views deep into the central core of the building and divide mass into four distinct blocks. Each block, in turn, shifts vertically to accommodate the program above and below them. The resulting “pinwheel” plan provides character and identity to the individual research labs. Precast concrete bands wrap each block, providing shading to the east and west facades and lifting up at the northeast and southwest blocks to support and channel wind to 24 rooftop-mounted wind turbines. The ground floor holds space for imaging, a vivarium and support labs.
