Segments 5 and 6 of State Highway 130 comprise a 40-mi route through Travis, Caldwell and Guadalupe counties to IH-10 near Seguin in Central Texas. The two segments are part of the larger, 89-mi SH 130 project that, when complete, will run east of Austin. The new highway will parallel IH-35 and is intended to relieve the freeway’s traffic volume through the Austin-San Antonio corridor. It will be a four-lane highway expandable to six lanes.
Segments 5 and 6 are being built and operated by the SH130 Concession Co. in partnership with the Texas Dept. of Transportation. The design-build contractor, Central Texas Highway Constructors, a joint venture formed by Cintra of Spain and Zachry Infrastructure of San Antonio, began construction almost four months ahead of the contractual deadline. Construction activities include traffic staging for bridge and pavement widening at SH 130’s major interchanges with SH 130’s Segment 4, SH 45 SE, and IH-10. Bridge construction is under way at a number of crossings while crews are preparing land, grading and performing drainage construction at various locations.
T.J. Lambrecht Construction of Euless is one of many subcontractors performing work on the job. Lambrecht is providing earth-moving services for several sections of the job. The firm’s scope of work includes clearing, topsoil stripping, mass excavation of approximately 10 million cu yds of material, placing 6 million cu yds of embankment, performing lime stabilization treatment, installing stone flexbase and seeding in support of the construction of 28 mi of new divided highway.
The overall job’s progress is most evident along the entire length of SH 130 to IH-10. Work is under way at the interchange with SH 130 on the overpass bridges. Beam setting began in April.
At press time, all traffic along IH-10 had been moved to the existing eastbound lanes so work could begin in the area of the westbound lanes. The majority of drainage structure work was under way with the installation of almost all large culverts.
