Construction of the "Grow the Force" trainee barracks at Fort Sam Houston follows two earlier projects (Task Orders One and Two) performed by design-build contractor Hensel Phelps. Following the completion of three, 1,200-person dormitories on the Medical Education and Training Campus, the contractor was awarded Task Orders Three and Four.
Task Order Three includes a full-sized, 1,200-person barracks, as well as facility connections to the post-wide local area network for both energy monitoring and controls. Included in the new construction were upgrades to fire protection, electrical services and mechanical services; as well as comprehensive building and furnishings-related interior design services and the installation of a 2,275-ton air conditioning system. Additional improvements to the 30-acre site include running tracks and parade grounds.
Task Order Four includes half of the second barracks planned for the site, with the remaining portion as a separate contract. The new 341,000-sq-ft barracks complex provides housing for 2,400 soldiers.
While the project will not be certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, it will be built to LEED-silver standards.
